Birdlife in the park is equally remarkable, with over 450 species recorded, including both endemic and migratory birds. Notable species include the shoebill stork, African fish eagle, and a variety of colorful kingfishers.

The more off-the-beaten-path Budongo Forest, located on the southern edge of the park, adds to the region’s biodiversity. This tropical rainforest is known for its population of chimpanzees and offers trekking opportunities for visitors eager to observe these fascinating primates in their natural habitat. Birdwatching in Budongo is also exceptional, with numerous species, including the elusive blue-throated roller.

The best time to visit Murchison Falls National Park is during the dry seasons, which occur from December to Februaryand June to September. These months offer optimal conditions for wildlife viewing, as animals are more active and easier to spot when water sources are limited. The drier weather also makes the park’s roads more accessible, enhancing your overall experience during game drives and other activities.

During the dry seasons, the chances of seeing four of the “Big Five” are higher, and birdwatching is particularly rewarding as migratory birds return to the area. This period is ideal for boat safaris on the Nile, as the water levels are lower, allowing for better wildlife visibility along the riverbanks.

While the dry seasons are popular, visiting during the rainy months (March to May and October to November) has its own advantages. The park is lush and green, providing stunning landscapes and vibrant wildlife experiences, including active nesting and breeding behaviors. Additionally, the rain often results in fewer tourists, allowing for a more intimate experience with nature.
