SAFARI GUIDE TO RWANDA

Best Times for Safari in Rwanda

Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” offers visitors breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and incredible wildlife experiences.

The best time to travel to Rwanda varies depending on your interests, from gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park to exploring the lush rainforests of Nyungwe. Rwanda experiences two main rainy seasons: the long rains from March to May and the short rains from October to November, which can affect accessibility and wildlife visibility.

However, the dry seasons—June to September and December to February—tend to offer the most favorable weather for outdoor activities.

Whether you’re drawn to the vibrant wildlife, the stunning scenery, or the cultural richness, understanding when to visit will enhance your experience in this captivating destination.

These months offer generally dry weather, ideal for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and wildlife viewing in Akagera. Short rains may occur, but conditions remain favorable for outdoor activities. Birdwatching in Nyungwe is also excellent, with migratory species present.

March, April & May:
March ushers in the long rainy season, continuing through April and tapering off through May.  While trails can be muddy and rain frequent, these months offer fewer tourists and lower rates at some accommodations.  The lush landscapes also make an excellent setting for photography.

June, July & August:
The dry season begins in June, making it one of the best times to visit Rwanda. Wildlife viewing in Akagera is at its peak, and gorilla trekking conditions are optimal with clearer trails. July and August remain busy months for tourism, offering fantastic weather for trekking and safari adventures.

September:
September marks the end of the dry season, offering great conditions for gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing with slightly fewer crowds than the peak of July and August. It’s also an excellent month for birdwatching as migratory birds start to return.

October & November:
The short rainy season begins in October, bringing occasional showers that refresh the landscape. While the rains may deter some travelers, this is an excellent time for birdwatching, and cultural explorations are still rewarding. The rain adds vibrancy to the scenery, perfect for photographers seeking lush, green backdrops.
