GORILLAS & GREAT MIGRATION SAFARI

Back-to-back gorilla treks, incredible game drives, and epic wildlife viewing set the stage for this journey across Uganda and Northern Tanzania. 

Designed for witnessing the Crossing Season of the Great Migration, you’ll explore two regions of the Serengeti in search of the massive wildebeest herds as they make their way north.  You’ll also explore Ngorongoro Crater and trek into Uganda’s forests to meet the mountain gorillas that live there.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Uganda

Karibu—a very warm welcome to Uganda! Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be picked up by a representative of Hornbill Treks & Safaris and transferred to your accommodations in Entebbe.  Enjoy the rest of the evening at your leisure.

Day 2: Bwindi National Park

In the morning, transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight to Bwindi.  From there, transfer to your lodge for check-in.  Relax and enjoy the amenities of your lodge or venture out on an optional activity in the region.

Day 3-4: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Over these next two days, set out on gorilla treks in Bwindi.  After breakfast we will meet the park rangers who will be our guides for the day, and then we will start the trek in search of the exquisite mountain gorillas of Uganda. Trekking can last between thirty minutes and eight hours, but once you discover the gorillas, you will be able to spend one unforgettable hour with them.

After your trek, return to your accommodations or set out on a cultural visit in the area.  If desired, add on our exclusive Beyond the Trek Session to meet with a local conservationist and learn about the care and protection of the mountain gorillas.

Day 5: Transfer to Arusha

Transfer to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to  Entebbe, before connecting onwards to your flight to Kilimanjaro.  Upon arrival, in Tanzania, you will be met and transferred to your lodge in Arusha.

Day 6: Wildlife Viewing in Lake Manyara National Park

In the morning, set out for Lake Manyara National Park, enjoying a cultural visit in the region along the way, with a village walk in Mto wa Mbu.  Then, explore Lake Manyara on a game drive–including a search for the park’s famous tree-climbing lions–before continuing on to your lodge in nearby Karatu or along the Crater Rim.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater

A spectacular experience awaits as you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater on an extended game drive, with a picnic lunch in the Crater.  Afterwards, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 8-9: Central Serengeti

In the morning, transfer to Central Serengeti with a game drive en-route (or opt for a scheduled light aircraft flight).  End the day at your accommodations, taking in classic views of the savanna.

The following day holds game drives in the Serengeti, which is home to abundant wildlife year-round.  You might opt to do a morning and evening game drive, or set out on a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch.  Your daily schedule can be determined with your guide the day before.

Day 10-11: Northern Serengeti

In the morning, transfer to the northern region of the park, arriving at your lodge for lunch.  The main draw of Northern Serengeti is the wildebeest migration–on game drives, you’ll have a chance to search for the spectacular herds as they thunder across the river to Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.

Day 12: Departure

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in time for your outbound international flight.  Or, continue your journey with a transfer to Zanzibar to explore Stone Town and relax along the shores of the Indian Ocean–see a sample itinerary here.
